The vegetables (and us, too) enjoyed some much needed rain during the past 2 weeks and coupled with some cooler temperatures, the colors of autumn are more vibrant than we thought they might be!
Also, although the chickens don't love the rain, they appreciate all the bugs it washes up to the surface for them. It's been fun to watch them make 'mad dashes' to capture crickets, grasshoppers, worms and other insect delights! (Don't worry, no pictures) Since the mornings have been dark and often overcast they hesitate to come out for breakfast by 7 AM, but only one more week until daylight savings time ends. (Don't forget to turn your clocks back on the night of November 2nd). When 7 AM is 6 AM (you know what I mean) the ladies will be up early and ready to greet the day as we're just getting to the farm! (Until the daylight continues to get shorter)
We hope you have a happy and safe Halloween! Don't forget to submit your Maryland Harvest order by midnight on the 31st!
What's New this Week at Maryland Harvest
Watermelon Radishes, Parsnips and Chioggia (Candy Striped) Beets are available!
Watermelon Radishes are bright and colorful (on the inside), mild tasting radishes, great in a saute with carrots and parsnips, tossed in a salad or roasted, pickled or made into radish chips!
Parsnips are great in soups with cabbage, carrots and potatoes or roasted with other root vegetables, pan fried with butter, grilled, mashed or added to stew!
Chioggia Beets also known as Candy-striped Beets, are originally from Italy near Venice and are a fun veggie to feature in salads and soups or in a pickling mix. They are very sweet and bleed less than other beets. They are also packed with nutrition - folate, manganese, potassium, fiber, iron and vitamin B6.
Cooking tip: If you boil these beets add a splash of lemon juice or vinegar to keep their color from fading.
Order some of each from Maryland Harvest this week!
